Liz Carr is a familiar face on the comedy circuit with her humorous brand of no nonsense comedy. A finalist at the 2006 Funny Woman Award and a contributor to the BBC online magazine 'Ouch', Liz makes it yet again to the finals of another competition.
Inside Comedy: What made you decide to enter the New Act of the Year competition?
Liz Carr: I love the hackney empire as a theatre and have seen many shows there before so the thought of being able to perform there myself... Plus, I know Alan Sugar supports the theatre so I hoped he'd be one of the judges as I'm a huge fan of 'The Apprentice'.
How did you prepare for the New Act of the Year auditions?
I took advice from others who'd done it who said don't expect an audience, don't expect anyone to laugh but do expect a small dog to join you on stage during your act.
What was your reaction when you learned you were a finalist and what did you do to celebrate?
I said fuck a lot. It was on Valentine's Day - I didn't get a card from my shag but this news made me far happier anyway.
How did you get started in comedy?
I started in sketch comedy and theatre but in 2005 was part of Abnormally Funny People - a line up of disabled comics.
Who were/are your comedy influences?
I love Bill Hicks, Stewart Lee, Jerry Sadowitz and many others but I don't think my stuff is quite like anyone else.
How long have you been doing comedy/stand-up?
My first stand up gig was in June 2005.
How would you best describe your act?
It's dark, on the edge and very down to earth.
What have you discovered about life as a comedian that nobody ever told you?
It's addictive and compulsive - I thought gigging twice a week was a lot but now I can't stop and 4/5 gigs a week still isn't enough.
What sagely advice would you give to aspiring and new comedians interested in getting into the funny business?
Be confident out there on stage - if you look like you belong out there then the audience will believe you do.
