Evie Anderson is no stranger to the cut and thrust world of comedy competitions having appeared in a showcase in 2006 for the Funny Women award. Evie's brand of musical comedy - opera to be precise - will delight audiences at the Hackney Empire.

Inside Comedy: What made you decide to enter the New Act of the Year competition?

Evie Anderson: A conversation with the Lord.

How did you prepare for the New Act of the Year auditions?

Lunges and star jumps mostly.

What was your reaction when you learned you were a finalist and what did you do to celebrate?

I punched the air. And to celebrate, I punched it again.

How did you get started in comedy?

I needed to get involved in some kind of activity that didn't involve crying and self-harm. In hindsight, I realised it was a bad choice.

Who were/are your comedy influences?

Sarah Silverman, followed by Margaret Cho and Maria Bamford, all American broads. Also Woody Allen, Bill Bailey, Harry Hill, Mike Wilmot and Stewart Lee.

How long have you been doing comedy/stand-up?

Nine Months. It's due in early March. I'm going to call it Mr Giggles, even if its a girl.

How would you best describe your act?

Simply awful.

What have you discovered about life as a comedian that nobody ever told you?

My G spot.

What sagely advice would you give to aspiring and new comedians interested in getting into the funny business?

You need to find a way of standing out. Get a hook. Literally. Like Abu Hamza. He's a laugh riot!

Evie Anderson is one of the finalists for the 2007 New Act of the Year competition at the Hackney Empire on Sunday 4 March. Visit the Hackney Empire website for further details.
